Kinesiology is set to become a regulated health profession in Ontario in the spring of 2013 under the Regulated Health Professions Act (1991). The regulatory body, the College of Kinesiologists of Ontario, will ensure Kinesiologists maintain and enhance their skills and knowledge through established standards of practice, as well as their public accountability.
According to the Province of Ontario’s Kinesiology Act 2007, the Scope of Practice of kinesiology is: the assessment of human movement and performance and its rehabilitation and management to maintain, rehabilitate or enhance movement and performance. 2007, c. 10, Sched. O, s. 3.
“Kinesiologist” will become a restricted title, and only licensed members of the College of Kinesiologists will be able to call themselves Kinesiologists. As such, to be a member of the Ontario Kinesiology Association, all Kinesiologists must also be members of the College of Kinesiologists of Ontario.
The College of Kinesiologists of Ontario will ensure Kinesiologists maintain 54 core competencies across five domains – knowledge, kinesiology practical expertise, professionalism/professional practice, communication and collaboration, and professional development.
