Exercise is increasingly being prescribed as part of the treatment and rehabilitation process for cancer patients. This course is designed with the goal of providing Personal Trainers with the skills and knowledge they need to safely work with clients who have had a diagnosis of cancer. Cancers covered in this course include: breast, colorectal, lung, ovarian, prostate, melanoma, leukemia, lymphoma, and multiple myeloma. Throughout the course attention will be played to the scope of practice of personal trainers, and how to identify when a client should be referred to a physiotherapist or medical professional. Through the use of case studies participants will have an opportunity to look at real world examples of exercise interventions for clients with cancer.
Course Outline Following completion of this course participants will have an understanding of the major types of cancer, cancer treatment, and symptoms of recurrence and an understanding of exercise techniques that are beneficial to clients with cancer, and exercise techniques that are contraindicated. Participants will have the knowledge needed to administer an oncology assessment to a client with a history of cancer after the PARmed-X has been signed by physician, and to develop individualized exercise programs that are specific to a client's type of cancer, treatment regimen and side-effects.
