BECOMING A MEMBER

Until the College of Kinesiologist of Ontario begins licensing individual kinesiologists the OKA membership criteria and process is as described below.

There are three categories of individual membership in the Ontario Kinesiology Association:

Certified Member - open to those individuals who meet the current certification criteria

Student Member - open to those individuals currently enrolled in a full-time kinesiology program at a recognized university

Affiliate Member - open to those individuals who have a general interest in the field of kinesiology or the Ontario Kinesiology Association

CERTIFIED MEMBERS - shall consist of individuals who have achieved the requisite academic standards, and whose applications for membership in the corporation are approved by the Board of Directors of the Corporation. Each Certified Member shall be entitled to one vote at all Meetings of the Members and shall be eligible for election of the Board and to the serve as officers of the Corporation.

Certified Membership Requirements - Certified applicants must have successfully completed a four year university level bachelor program in kinesiology (either BA or B.Sc.) from a recognized Canadian university, or successfully completed a university program which is deemed substantially equivalent to a four year university level bachelor program in kinesiology (either BA or B.Sc.) from a recognized Canadian university kinesiology program**.

 

**Graduates of foreign based universities are required to submit original transcripts and diplomas in their original language, plus copies that have been officially translated into English or French and officially Notarized.

Applicants are also required to provide proof of English language proficiency such as TOEFL or WES English proficiency test, unless your primary language of teaching was English or French (documentation required).

If you are eligible for Certified Membership - Your application will be submitted for processing by the Membership Committee and appropriate fees will be charged according to the fee schedule outlined on page 1. Once your application has been approved you will receive your new members package containing your Membership Certificate, Membership Card, Insurance Certificate, and any other relevant information that is being circulated at that time within 4 weeks.

If you are not eligible for Certified Membership: You will be advised of any additional information that is required to meet the certified criteria and given an opportunity to submit it for inclusion with your application. If you are still not eligible after review of additional documentation, or you do not have any additional documentation to submit, you will be offered Affiliate status in the OKA (and advised of dues payable). If you do not wish to take advantage of Affiliate membershipyou must notify the OKA office in writing. You have 30 days to pay the applicable fees.

All questions or disputes related to Membership Committee decisions must be submitted in writing to the Membership Committee. Responses will be sent to the applicant in writing following the Committee's next meeting

Reinstatement of Membership

Under certain circumstances past members who have let their membership lapse, can reinstate their membership by completing a Reinstatement Form and submitting the applicable reinstatement  dues. Reinstatement is only available within a three year window from when you were last a certified member. Applicants who are outside of this three year timeframe must re-apply and go through the certification process again (including submission of all required documentation). If you are unsure if you qualify for reinstatement please contact the Association office.
